Iron out of ideas with Randall on song for U’s

- By Neil Goulding

BEAMING Sutton United boss Matt Gray hailed his “ruthless” side after they put relegation-stricken Scunthorpe United to the sword early on.

The U’s reignited their promotion push with a first win in six as they condemned the Iron to a worrying tenth defeat in 12 games.

Will Randall bagged a brace, while Rob Milsom scored from the spot and Joe Kizzi ensured Sutton remain unbeaten at home since late October.

Gray said:

“That was a brilliant performance and I’m really pleased for the lads.

“We were ruthless and took our chances and that’s all you want as a manager. A scoreline like that has been coming.

“It’s been tough the past few weeks results wise. I don’t think we have been that far off it. But we are still right up there and that’s testament to this group of players.”

Midway through the first half, striker Omar Bugiel was bundled over in the box and Milsom emphatically converted the spot-kick to put the hosts ahead.

And just moments later Randall was given too much space and slotted home from outside of the box to put Sutton in full control.

Kizzi then made it three shortly before half-time as he cut in from the right-hand side and fired beyond a helpless Rory Watson.

After the break, Watson kept out David Ajiboye but couldn’t prevent Randall from doubling his tally at the near post after 62 minutes.

Scunthorpe got a late consolation through Harry Beautyman’s own goal after a hosts’ mix up but are now a worrying eight points adrift of safety.

With nonleague football looking imminent, disgruntled boss Keith Hill admitted: “I’m really disappointed with the physical element. I think the opposition took advantage of the weakness in our duels if you like.

“We were dominated. I’m really upset and surprised by that. We just didn’t deal with it.

“Mistakes, mistakes, mistakes. We’re just not good enough, it’s as simple as that and we have to accept reality.

“I’m finding it really difficult to remain composed and not boil over.

The mistakes that we are making are absolutely schoolboy. Not only do I know it, but the opposition knows it.”
