MCGEE & THOMAS ARE BOTH KEEPERS

- By Tom Blackett

FOREST Green Rovers are already in safe hands for next season – goalkeepers Luke McGee and Lewis Thomas have both extended their contracts.

First-choice McGee has been a revelation for Rob Edwards’ League Two outfit this playing, playing a vital role in their march to the top of the table. It now looks likely he will be playing third tier football with Rovers next term.

The 26-year-old shot-stopper made the move to Nailsworth in 2020 and has since made 72 appearances in all competitions.

He previously played for Tottenham, Peterborough (loan), Portsmouth and Bradford (loan).

“I think it’s nice when you have the consistency and support from the manager and I feel a lot better going into games,” said McGee. “I have the confidence to go and do what I do best and I think it shows.”

Goalkeeper coach

Dan Connor added:

“Luke is hitting the levels we thought he would when we brought him in from Portsmouth.

“He’s reaping the rewards of his patience and has put in some great performances this year and won us some big points. His natural ability is really showing through.”

Thomas, meanwhile, is set to continue to give McGee stiff competition for the number one jersey.

The 24-year-old joined Rovers in the summer of 2018 from Swansea and is the club’s longest-serving player. The Welshman has made 38 appearances for Rovers.

Brilliant

“The fans have been brilliant since I first joined the club,” Thomas, below, told the club website.

“There’s a real family feel about the place and it’s somewhere I enjoy being. I look forward to coming into work every day and that’s why I’ve signed a new deal.”

Connor added: “He’s reliable, he’s trustworthy and can take his share of Luke’s success this season because of how hard he pushes him as a companion and a competitor. He’s the longest-serving player in the squad for a reason.”
