U’S MAKE EFFORTS TO HELP UKRAINE

-

WARM-HEARTED Colchester United have pledged all gate receipts from their match against Forest Green Rovers to helping those fleeing the war in Ukraine.

The U’s take on the League Two leaders tomorrow week in a match labelled ‘A Game for Ukraine’. All tickets will cost £10 and Colchester are hoping for a bumper turn-out to raise as much money as possible.

Backing

The idea has the backing of the EFL, and the club, who plan to wear a special blue and yellow kit, have also set up a JustGiving page so anyone who wants to can contribute even if they can’t attend the televised match.

The British Red Cross will receive any funds raised, with it going specifically to the DEC Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal.

U’s owner and chairman Robbie Cowling said: “I’m sure many of you are feeling devastated by the events in the Ukraine.

“The generations in my family that came before me, including my parents, grandparents and great grandparents, fought for the freedom and the peace that I have been fortunate enough to enjoy during my lifetime.

“The same is likely to be true in many of the families that attend Colchester United games. I hope you can get behind this event.”

General manager Tim Waddington added: “We want a full house for this game, to maximise the money that we can raise for those fleeing the war in Ukraine. A 10,000 crowd would give us a total of £100,000 to donate.

Start

“A lot more than £100,000 will of course be needed for the millions of Ukrainian civilians fleeing, so hopefully this will be the start of the fundraising from the football family in the UK.

“We know that this appeal is now also being fully supported by the EFL and our clubs across the country.”
