Supporters must enjoy this ride – Schumacher

- By Connor Dixon

STEVEN Schumacher reckons Plymouth should embrace their end-of-season run-in, especially after the Pilgrims’ first league win at Bolton Wanderers since 1967.

Defender Macaulay Gillesphey’s firsthalf header secured Argyle’s place in the top six with ten games to go.

And Home Park boss Schumacher says of the Devon side’s lofty position: “Everyone should be excited. We didn’t think we would be in this position at the start of the season. So, we have nothing to lose. We are just going to go for it.

“We have a couple of games in hand over the teams above us. So, if we concentrate on what we are doing and pick up points where we can, we will be alright.

“Bolton are in great form, so we knew we would have to play well with the ball and defend well. They have some unbelievable forwards.”

Skipper Joe Edwards nearly doubled Argyle’s lead after 53 minutes, but was denied by Ricardo Santos’s goal-line clearance.

Wanderers did their best to capitalise on the let-off.

Elias Kachunga, introduced as a substitute moments earlier, contrived to head against the foot of Michael Cooper’s post from close. Fellow replacement Amadou Bakayoko was also frustrated by Cooper in his efforts to draw Ian Evatt’s side level.

Plymouth were constantly under the cosh in the latter stages though Ryan Hardie was denied his side’s second by James Trafford.

Wanderers snatched a late equaliser against Morecambe in midweek but a second defeat in four games leaves their top six ambitions hanging by a thread.

Home manager Ian Evatt pointed the finger at his misfiring strikers.

Substitute Kachunga was the main culprit with an unmarked close-range header that hit a post.

“It was disappointing to concede in the manner we did,” said Evatt.

“But we are missing gilt-edged chances. The keeper made some great saves, but he shouldn’t be given the opportunity.

“We missed chances last Saturday, but it didn’t cost us. We missed them Tuesday and it cost us. We missed them again and it has cost us dear. I was a centre back and when you see your front players miss chance after chance, it wobbles you.”
