We weren’t the better side, admits Schumacher

- By David Brown

STEVEN Schumacher admitted Accrington were the better team – despite Plymouth inflicting a heavy loss on them!

Panutche Camara, Joe Edwards and sub Niall Ennis scored, before visiting keeper Toby Savin saw red in the 68th minute for a foul on Argyle top scorer Ryan Hardie, who took his tally to 19 in the 79th minute as Argyle eased home.

Schumacher said: “The players have said we have to play better than that, which sounds mad, because you can’t be too disappointed with a 4-0 home win.

“Accrington were the best team, certainly in the first half.

“Up until the keeper got sent off, it was a real tough game.

“We produced two moments (of quality) and we scored two goals but, apart from that, there were a few breaks where we were two versus two and three versus three on their goal and we just didn’t make the right pass.

“I thought we were second best, but teams at the top of the league find a way to win, and we did.”

Accrington skipper Sean McConville’s corner from left was headed on to bar by Michael Nottingham after ten minutes.

But Argyle opened the scoring in the 12th minute when Danny Mayor’s cross was knocked down by Jordon Garrick for Camara to score.

Despite dominating possession, Accrington found themselves 2-0 by half-time.

Edwards created and finished his 37th-minute goal, going on a mazy run before losing the ball, which came back to him off a defender. Edwards continued his run, before slotting in. James Wilson put sub Ennis in on goal for Argyle’s third after 64 minutes.

Accrington keeper Savin saw red after 68 minutes after fouling Argyle top scorer Hardie on his way to goal.

Edwards’ drive came back off the upright in the 77th minutes as Argyle piled on pressure. That told when Mayor’s cross was helped home by 19-goal Hardie.

Accrington boss John Coleman said: “We seem to find a way to gift goals and not take the chances we get. Four-nil sounds like a drubbing and, in the end, it is a drubbing.

“But 11v11, could you honestly say they were the better team? Far from it.

“But they scored the first, second and third goals against the run of play.”
