MCCANN SO CHUFFED AS ROVERS KO DRAGONS...

- By John Lyons

DELIGHTED Doncaster boss Grant McCann saluted his in-form side after they put a dent in Wrexham’s promotion bid with a 1-0 home success on Tuesday night.

Owen Bailey rose high to head home the only goal just before the break, making it five wins on the spin for Rovers.

“I felt it was another good performance from us,” said McCann.

“We knew Wrexham are very good on transition so we had to be good on the ball.

“They sit in that midblock and when they win it back they break quickly.

“It was a really good performance from us and I’m really proud of the boys.

“We scored a really good goal worthy of winning any game.

“A tremendous cross from James Maxwell and an excellent header from Owen Bailey, who got up above Will Boyle who’s probably their best header of the ball.”

His Red Dragons counterpart Phil Parkinson, whose side remained third, said: “I thought first half we weren’t really at it.

“They were just sharper than us and their quality was better and that’s because they were really on the money.

“We had patches but there were too many cheap giveaways in that first half.

“We let crosses come into the box too easily and we got punished for one.

“We’ve had a real go second half, but were unlucky for the goal that got disallowed not to stand (a Paul Mullin effort ruled out for offside).”

Stockport had strengthened their grip on top spot the previous day with a hard-fought 1-0 home success against AFC Wimbledon.

The Dons paid for James Tilley’s first half penalty miss when sub Odin Bailey struck an 85th-minute winner for the Hatters.

Second-placed Mansfield had to sit tight – their home match against Accrington Stanley was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

Sub Ellis Harrison scored twice for MK Dons, but they had to settle for a point from a 3-3 draw at Notts County after Aaron Nemane netted in injury time.

Crawley stormed to a 4-0 victory at Newport County, while Harrogate staged a sensational second half recovery to beat Gillingham 5-1, Matty Daly scoring twice.

Basement side Forest Green pulled off a shock 3-0 victory at Crewe, Jordon Garrick scoring two, while Sutton climbed out of the relegation zone at Colchester’s expense with their fourth win in a row – a 3-1 victory against out-of-sorts Swindon.
