SURGING HATTERS SHATTER THE U’S

- LEAGUE TWO By Tom Blackett

STOCKPORT moved to the brink of promotion with a hard-fought 2-1 victory at relegation-haunted Colchester. Nick Powell fired home to give the Hatters the lead just after the half-hour, but it was all-square just before the break when Cameron McGeehan sidefooted home from close-range.

Stockport restored their lead when the in-form Paddy Madden netted from close in just after the hour mark and they were left breathing a sigh of relief when keeper Ben Hinchliffe saved McGeehan’s 67th-minute penalty.

Wrexham also took a giant stride towards League One with a 4-1 thumping of playoff hopefuls Crawley. Prolific marksman Paul Mullin led the way with a double while Ryan Barnett and Andy Can

non also got on the scoresheet. Klaidi Lolos notched a late consolation for the Red Devils. Wrexham assistant boss Steve Parkin said: “It was a really clinical performance.” Mansfield regained third place with a vital 1-0 home win against basement side Forest Green. After a recent wobble, the Stags needed a boost and they got it on 20 minutes when Tom Nichols looped a header over Vicente Reyes for the winner.

Crewe closed in on the play-offs with a 1-0 victory at Morecambe. Elliott Nevitt’s 70th-minute goal proved decisive for the Railwaymen, who had Lewis Leigh sent off for a foul late on.

Red-hot Doncaster made it seven league wins on the spin with a 2-1 home triumph against Walsall. Joe Ironside (39 mins) and Hakeeb Adelakun (77) were on target before the Saddlers pulled one back through Isaac Hutchinson in stoppage time. Accrington ran out 3-1 winners at out-of-sorts Newport, while George Thomson smashed home the only goal as Harrogate edged out Grimsby.
