A mystery outing kept the ladies of Haugh of Urr Rural guessing while they waited patiently for resident Elizabeth Smith to arrive.
Leaving the hall with drivers appointed and informed, the ladies were driven away to a secret destination. A short drive on a beautiful evening led towards the coast and Barnbarroch Pottery.
Twenty ladies squeezed in to the workshop and were welcomed by Christine Smith.
Christine has been in the business for many years and has a very different style of pottery from most.
She showed how she achieved the special effects on some of the individual pieces demonstrating the equipment used and she talked about colours, firing, drawing patterns and finished by “throwing”a number of different items including a chicken.
While mugs will always be in demand she talked about some of the commissions undertaken.
Everyone laughed at the pottery picture showing some long bearded men which revealed bare bottoms on the other side – a complete surprise!
Elizabeth thanked Christine for giving up her time and for her excellent demonstration.
Time was of the essence; members were expected at another “secret”venue. After a quick look round the shop it was off in the cars again, not far, to The Mariner at Kippford where sandwiches and a sweet awaited.
Elizabeth conducted a little business – Haugh of Urr Fete would be on August 21 and baking competitions were discussed.
Crocketford Rural invite members to their open night on Monday, September 12. Liz Green gave a vote of thanks to the president and secretary Maybelle Coltart for organising the mystery outing.
After the summer break the next meeting will be September 21 at 7.30pm in UrrVillage Hall.
