Supermarkets offer charities food for nought
A new scheme will ensure unsold food at two supermarkets doesn’t go to waste.
Fareshare Food Cloud will see leftover food at the Tesco stores in Castle Douglas and Kirkcudbright given to charities for free to turn into meals for vulnerable people.
The move is part of the supermarket chain’s community food connection programme.
Tesco stores director for Dumfries and north-east England Ross Blake said: “We are looking forward to forging strong links with local charities and community groups.”
Charities that register for the scheme will be alerted by a mobile phone app to unsold food that is available at the end of each day. It will include fresh produce and baked goods as well as meat, dairy and ready meals.
Groups looking to sign up for the scheme should register at fareshare.org.uk/fareshare-foodcloud.
