More big names sign up for Tour

Cas­tle Dou­glas has se­cured a whole host of Olympic medals.

Last week, the News re­vealed that five-time goal medal­list Bradley Wig­gins will race into the town as part of the Tour of Bri­tain on Sun­day, Septem­ber 4.

And this week it has been con­firmed that he’ll be joined by fel­low Rio gold medal­list Owain Doull.

They’ll be rid­ing along­side sil­ver medal­list Mark Cavendish of Team Di­men­sion Data.

The Manx­man is the most suc­cess­ful sprinter in Tour de France his­tory with 30 stage wins.

He could bat­tle it out with his big ri­val, Ger­man An­dre Greipel, for the open­ing stage win on King Street.

He has also won 10 stages of the Tour of Bri­tain in­clud­ing two into Dum­fries in 2011 and 2012.

Race direc­tor Mick Ben­nett said: “We are de­lighted to be wel­com­ing two of our Olympic cham­pi­ons to the Tour of Bri­tain just three weeks af­ter their suc­cess in Rio.

“As a for­mer win­ner of the Tour of Bri­tain, it is al­ways a plea­sure to wel­come Sir Bradley Wig­gins back to Bri­tain’s big­gest race while Owain Doull was the star of the 2015 Tour.

“In Mark Cavendish and An­dre Greipel we have two of the world’s top sprint­ers who are both al­ready mul­ti­ple Tour of Bri­tain stage win­ners.”
