Tro­phy quest suc­cess for Alan - af­ter 65 years

Alan Franks has claimed his first ten­nis tro­phy af­ter more than 65 years of try­ing.

Alan and play­ing part­ner Mau­reen Col­beck won the Carl White Me­mo­rial Tro­phy at Dal­beat­tie Ten­nis Club which at­tracted 24 play­ers.

On a glo­ri­ous day play started with the round robin com­pe­ti­tion with 12 cou­ples di­vided into two groups. Ea­gerly fought matches en­sued with some long games, close scores and Keith Thom in his wheel­chair cer­tainly added a bit of a dif­fer­ence to the play.

In group one Shona MacKen­zie and Sue Bore­ham emerged the win­ners on 18 points with the win­ners of group two be­ing Alan and Mau­reen on 14 points.

The group win­ners went head to head in the fi­nal with Alan play­ing some lovely top spin shots and Mau­reen ea­gerly back­ing him up with her great net play. Shona and Sue were play­ing equally well but the even­tual win­ners were Alan and Mau­reen with a to­tal of over 150 years of age notched up be­tween them.

Af­ter the pre­sen­ta­tion of prizes by Keith Thom, Alan thanked his part­ner for the great game and was just sorry that his mum and dad could not be here to see him re­ceiv­ing his first ten­nis tro­phy af­ter hav­ing tried to win one for more than 65 years.

Lunch and re­fresh­ments fol­lowed in the club­house which rounded off the 13th year of the very suc­cess­ful tour­na­ment.
