Trophy quest success for Alan - after 65 years
Alan Franks has claimed his first tennis trophy after more than 65 years of trying.
Alan and playing partner Maureen Colbeck won the Carl White Memorial Trophy at Dalbeattie Tennis Club which attracted 24 players.
On a glorious day play started with the round robin competition with 12 couples divided into two groups. Eagerly fought matches ensued with some long games, close scores and Keith Thom in his wheelchair certainly added a bit of a difference to the play.
In group one Shona MacKenzie and Sue Boreham emerged the winners on 18 points with the winners of group two being Alan and Maureen on 14 points.
The group winners went head to head in the final with Alan playing some lovely top spin shots and Maureen eagerly backing him up with her great net play. Shona and Sue were playing equally well but the eventual winners were Alan and Maureen with a total of over 150 years of age notched up between them.
After the presentation of prizes by Keith Thom, Alan thanked his partner for the great game and was just sorry that his mum and dad could not be here to see him receiving his first tennis trophy after having tried to win one for more than 65 years.
Lunch and refreshments followed in the clubhouse which rounded off the 13th year of the very successful tournament.
