Check snares alert after gruesome find
Farmers are being urged to check snares on their land regularly.
It comes after a walker discovered a decomposing cat in one of the traps on a farm near Creetown.
Police wildlife crime liaison officer Alan Steel said: “They are perfectly legal but anyone who uses them has to complete a course and they are given a number of tags specific to the species they wish to snare.
“They are used for vermin control for foxes and badgers. They have to be checked once every 24 hours but we are finding that gamekeepers and people in that profession do it more often because there is such a spotlight on it just now with more people using the country side.
“In Dumfries and Galloway we find there a lot of old snares being discarded and quite a few are being found by walkers.”
