A sailor from Castle Douglas is in the running for an award.

Anna Miller has been shortlisted in the Class Academy Sailor of theYear Category in the RoyalYachting Association Scotland’s annual awards.

The award recognises junior sailors who have been involved in developing their skills through the class academy training scheme through the winter.

Anna, who is a member of Annandale Sailing Club and sails in the optimist class, has been shortlisted after continued application and courage to push herself in the bigger groups when working with all the more experienced sailors at the academies to develop her sailing skills.

This enabled her to transfer these skills to trying out other boats, winning aTopper event at North Berwick, joining Castle Douglas High School’s team in the regional sailing regatta and winning two races and sailing a double hander with her coach in KippfordWeek and winning their class.

Anna said: “I feel that by going to the academies it has made me a more independent sailor and person across all areas of life. This is because the coaches make us take responsibility for not only organising our boats and rigging but for analysing our performances on video almost frame by frame.

“Also by encouraging us to set our own goals and measure progress in them, I feel I have been able to improve my sailing in a focused way by applying their feedback. I’m happy that this year I’ve made steady progress in my results and when I’ve had a poor result I can identify why.”

The winners will be announced at a ceremony at sportscotland National Centre Inverclyde in Largs on Saturday.
