Livestock worrying bill bid
MSP Emma Harper chaired talks at Holyrood on livestock worrying ahead of her forthcoming Members’ Bill to improve laws on the issue.
Organisations including NFU Scotland, The National Sheep Association (NSA) and the SSPCA attended.
Ms Harper said: “Everyone is united that more needs to be done to protect the livelihoods of farmers and to protect the welfare of livestock, particularly sheep.”
Kathy Peebles, vicechairman of NSA Scotland, welcomed the move.
She said: “We would hope this proposed bill will help raise awareness. The problem can be avoided if owners would put their dog on a lead when they see sheep.”
Ms Harper will be holding further meetings on the issue across the region.
They include The King’s Arms, Castle Douglas, on July 12, from 6.30pm; and Dumfries Rugby Club, on July 25, from 6.30pm.
