St Cuthbert Wanderers have added a fifth Newton Stewart player to their squad for the new season. through the season relying on the same boys from the squad.

“Two other boys have become available and we’re talking to them. If we get them in that would take us to a squad of 22 or 23 which would be a good number.”

Saints were due to play their first friendly on Saturday but the game against a Queen of the South select was cancelled late on.

Last night they were set to face Scaur before hosting junior side Lesmahagow on Saturday.

Fraser said: “Saturday is our first big test. We played them last year and lost 2-1 and they’re a good standard similar to what we face in the South.

“Saturday was unfortunate. They let us know during the week that they couldn’t fulfil the fixture.

“I think the problem is a lot of their boys and coaches are from the north east of England and I think it was due to the World Cup.”

He added: “It was too short notice to arrange anything else so we had everyone down to St Mary’s and played 90 minutes between two teams.

“It wasn’t as competitive as we’d have liked but it was a good workout.”
