SCSC challenge to Dalbeattie for the mixed league title
Round seven of the Dumfries and Galloway Mixed Doubles Leagues were played on August 29, in a season where rain has postponed many matches.
In Division 1, SCSC (Castle Douglas) were away to Kirkcudbright A team, with the Castle Douglas team having won their first three league matches.
The Castle Douglas team was Colin Kennedy, Bruce Todd, Susan Nugent and Lindsay Kennedy (in for the injured Charlotte Carson). Kirkcudbright were at full strength with Iain Cain, Lee Anderson, Jane Hainey and Jill Johnston.
In round one ties, Colin and Susan took on Iain and Jane in a high quality game. It was neck and neck to start with as the home team defended well but strong forehands and very solid volleying saw the visitors take charge as they won 6-1, 6-3.
On court two, Bruce and Lindsay also had a good game with lots of lengthy rallies and some powerful ground strokes saw the visitors take control and triumph 6-3, 6-3.
In round two ties, Bruce and Susan proved too strong for Lee and Jane and they won in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 but play on the other court went on much much later !
In the “match of the day” Colin and Lindsay took on Iain and Jill. In set one, Iain and Jill broke serve first to take the opening set 6-4 before the husband and wife duo, re-grouped to level the match with a 6-2 second set win.
In the decider, with light fading very fast it was the more attacking play from the visitors that proved decisive as Colin and Lindsay took the championship tie break by 10 points to 5.
This 4-0 win sees SCSC (Castle Douglas) with eight points from four matches, equal top with league title holders Dalbeattie A who also haven’t dropped a point.
This week sees SCSC with two home matches, first against a strong Dumfries A team and then against the title holders from Dalbeattie. These matches will test their credentials towards challenging Dalbeattie A this year.
In Division 2, the Dalbeattie B team are top of the table and looking good for promotion, whilst Dumfries B and Kirkcudbright are in a real tussle to see who gets relegated from the top flight.
