Saturday events start
There has been little competition orienteering lately but Solway Orienteers are now ready to offer their monthly Saturday competitions.
To be prepared, some travelled over the border last week to get in some navigation practice in decent weather. Dave and Jane McQuillen tried Border Liners Cumbrian Galoppen at Swindale. Dave ran to a very creditable place of eighth on the green course. Wife Jane ran short green and finished in 19th position.
West Cumbria club held itsd Galoppen the next day at High Brow, Keswick. Joyce Rammell was the only Solway member to compete and ended 13th on the short green.
This coming Saturday, Solway will host a score event at Shambellie. This means all competitors need to be there between 10am and 10.30am for a mass start at 10.45am. Runners are given either 45 or 70 minutes to visit as many control points as possible in the wood. Cost for the map is £3.50/£2 for seniors/juniors with a charge of £2/£1 levy for non-members, and registration will be in the car park at the entrance to Shambellie House.
There will also be a simple beginners’ course for those wishing to try orienteering for the first time.
This is in alignment with the Doors Open Day and has no charge attached to it. Start times for this course is 10.30am to 11.30am and courses close at 12.15pm.
After the event, members will make their way to Shambellie House which has been made available to the club members to have lunch and attend the club AGM.
Full information on the event and parking location information is on the club website: www.solwayoreinteers.co.uk .
