The search is on to find the Ste­wartry’s top sport­ing stars.

Nom­i­na­tions for this year’s Ste­wartry Sports Awards, which are or­gan­ised by Ste­wartry Sports Coun­cil, are now open.The cer­e­mony aims to recog­nise all the hard work and achieve­ments of the area’s sportswomen, men, coaches, teams and clubs in 2018.

The Ste­wartry may not be the big­gest area but it punches above its weight when it comes to sport­ing ex­cel­lence and the judges will have a tough time de­cid­ing this year’s win­ners.

The nom­i­na­tion process is your chance to make sure the right peo­ple are recog­nised and it’s im­por­tant to en­sure you put for­ward your favourite can­di­date so they aren’t over­looked.

All en­tries will be con­sid­ered by the ex­pert panel of judges and the win­ners will be an­nounced at Erne­spie House Ho­tel in Cas­tle Dou­glas on Fri­day, Novem­ber 16, with ev­ery­one wel­come to at­tend the cer­e­mony.

Lo­cal busi­nesses are keen to see sports­peo­ple recog­nised through their con­tin­ued spon­sor­ship of the awards and the sports coun­cil is grate­ful to them for their con­tin­ued sup­port. This year’s cat­e­gories are:

Sports Per­son­al­ity of the Year, spon­sored by the Gal­loway News: This cat­e­gory is open to any per­son liv­ing in, or orig­i­nally from, the Ste­wartry who has achieved suc­cess at lo­cal, na­tional or in­ter­na­tional level.

Ju­nior Sports Per­son­al­ity of the Year, spon­sored by the The Co-op­er­a­tive: This award is open to any­one un­der the age of 18 who is liv­ing in the Ste­wartry.

Team of the year, spon­sored by BSW Tim­ber, Dalbeattie: This award is open to any team that plays in or rep­re­sents the Ste­wartry in any sport and any age level.

Club of the year, spon­sored by The Co­coa Bean Fac­tory: This award is open to any sports club based in or rep­re­sent­ing the Ste­wartry.

Coach/Ad­min­is­tra­tor of the Year, spon­sored by Drew Low, Cas­tle Dou­glas: This prize is open to some­one who has shown ded­i­ca­tion or suc­cess in coach­ing or pro­vid­ing the ad­min­is­tra­tive back-up to club or in­di­vid­ual in the past year.

Out­stand­ing Achieve­ment at Club Level: This is open to teams or in­di­vid­u­als who have demon­strated an achieve­ment or per­for­mance at a lo­cal or na­tional level which is wor­thy of recog­ni­tion.

There are two cat­e­gories: Ju­nior sec­tion which is spon­sored by J Smith Fenc­ing and Se­nior sec­tion which is spon­sored by H Smith and Sons.

New­comer to Sport award, spon­sored by He­len Bell: This is open to any club, team or in­di­vid­ual who has re­cently (in the past three years) taken up a new sport and met with suc­cess.

Ser­vice to Sport award, spon­sored by the Scot­tish As­so­ci­a­tion of Lo­cal Sports Coun­cils: Open to any in­di­vid­ual coach/ad­min­is­tra­tor for their vol­un­tary con­tri­bu­tion to sport over a lengthy pe­riod of time.

Al­ter­na­tively, you can down­load a form from www. stew­artrys­portscoun­cil.co.uk and send it to Ste­wartry Sports Coun­cil Sports Awards, Com­mu­nity Cen­tre, Cot­ton Street, Cas­tle Dou­glas, DG7 1AJ. Forms are also avail­able from Amy Brad­bury at the com­mu­nity cen­tre and nom­i­na­tions can be e-mailed to amy.brad­bury@dum­gal.gov.uk. All nom­i­na­tions must be sub­mit­ted by Fri­day, Oc­to­ber 19.

Last year’s win­ners should now re­turn their tro­phies to Amy Brad­bury at the ad­dress above.
