Lilly’s time as presbytery leader Role of the moderator
Glenkens Churches Guild A glimpse into the role of the presbytery moderator was provided by Lilly Stevenson.
The first meeting of the new session took place in the Session House, Dalry.
The convener, Joan Walker, welcomed nine members and one visitor and led opening devotions.
In keeping with the guild strategy One Journey, Many Roads and this year’s theme Seeking the Way, Joan had chosen the hymn Teach me Thy Way, O Lord to open the meeting. Betty Peacock gave the reading, taken from Psalm 86, verses 11-17.
Joan asked everyone to remember Dorothy Shaw, a devoted guild member, who had died recently. Joan recalled how Dorothy had been a stalwart member who would always provide baking and help at events. Dorothy was remembered during a short period of silence before the opening prayer.
The speaker Lilly Stevenson, last year’s presbytery moderator, was introduced.
She gave a talk describing how she had been persuaded to take on the role and how she had tackled the somewhat daunting aspects of it, given she is not a church minister.
Mrs Stevenson provided descriptions of the many services and events she had attended and told of the highlights during the year.
An especially memorable event was the visit of the moderator of the general assembly, the Right Reverend Dr Derek Browning, to the presbytery. During the visit, Mrs Stevenson had enjoyed the service in St Michael’s Church, Dumfries.
At the general assembly in May, Mrs Stevenson had been chosen as the elder to meet the lord high commissioner, along with a minister and a deacon. Her attendance at the general assembly had been another highlight of the year.
Mrs Stevenson had visited most churches in the presbytery and participated in different types of services in different types of church buildings – some with traditional pews, some with chairs.
She concluded that she was very glad she had agreed to take on the challenge of the role of presbytery moderator which had brought her many new and enriching experiences.
Primrose Morrison thanked Mrs Stevenson for her detailed description of her year as presbytery moderator and the insight she had provided into the variety of duties involved.
After tea, business matters were discussed, including arrangements for the November meeting. Convener Joan closed the meeting with a prayer.
