Future under discussion
An extraordinary general meeting of Stewartry Agricultural Discussion Society will take place next week.
And the matter being discussed will be the organisation itself.
Dwindling numbers mean members will be asked whether the organisation – founded in 1961 – should continue.
The society used to attract big numbers to talks but in recent years the committee has been joined by audience numbers in the single figures.
Treasurer/secretary DavidYoung said:“We have managed to attract some excellent speakers from as far afield as Northumberland but we don’t want to organise meetings and bring speakers if no one is coming.
“A few years ago we cut it down to two meetings a year but that didn’t make any difference.
“I think it’s just a sign of the times and it may be that it’s run its course.
“I don’t know if it’s because people no longer want to come to meetings or that older members are not as mobile as before.
“I think the younger generation is getting their information in different ways.”
The EGM will take place at RingfordVillage Hall onTuesday, November 6 at 7.30pm.
MrYoung added:“I can’t forecast whether it will be continuing or whether it will not but if it does continue it will be with a different committee.”
