Colombian farmers visit

The Galloway News - - GALLOWAY VIEW -

A group of Colombian farmers were special guests at Cream O’Galloway recently.

The visit was set up by Rutie Ballestas, who runs Fruto del Espiritu – a company which encourages farmers in Colombia to grow fruit instead of drugs.

Cream O’Galloway was the first company to buy pure fruit juice from the company, which it turns into mora sorbet using puree of blackberries from the Andes mountains.

Rutie, who is the niece of Borgue resident Elizabeth brown, organised the event called Sowing Peace in Columbia – From Drugs to Fruit – so that people in the Stewartry could find out more about the project.

The farmers welcome groups of smallholder farmers from former conflict regions rife with illicit crops, teaching them good agricultural practices for legal crops.

The group was also visiting other parts of Scotland during thevisit.
