ACTOR GETS UNI HONOUR
Actor Gary Lewis has been honoured by Glasgow Caledonian University.
Gary, who lives in Kirkcudbright, was presented with an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Letters for his outstanding contribution to the TV and film industry.
It also recognised his support for the university’s students and donations to the archive collection.
The actor has starred in films such as Billy Elliot and Gangs of New York as well as in TV drama Outlander alongside Glenkens actor Sam Heughan.
Gary, who graduated from a university founding institution with a BA (Hons) in Social Sciences in 1983, said: “I came here when I was 23 and I had worked for five years or so beforehand, so I loved the opportunity to study and I loved the social life, music and literature.
“There were great bands in the students’ union and there were great books in the library. It was heaven.
“My friends, my wife and my mother are here today and I’m really chuffed.
“My advice to graduates would be to enjoy yourself and make the most of this opportunity.”
