First home loss to Greenock

The Galloway News - - DRIVE TIME EXTRA -

T J McCarney and Mick McCulloch put in a couple of strong tackles as Greenock pressured the Blacks’ line before opening the scoring with a try at the posts which was easily converted for 7-0 to Wanderers after only eight minutes.

Seven minutes later Milligan and Fingland gained a lineout for Stewartry which the Blacks won and Maxwell broke, winning another penalty. Craig Mosey kicked the points for the Blacks, taking the score to 3-7.

Mosey put in a big clearance kick, taking play to the Greenock 22, where Spence won a tackle and a scrum for a knock-on.

Hamilton won a penalty as Stewartry put Greenock under pressure with Picken and Austin carving holes in the defence. Boyd was just beaten in a chase to the corner.

It all came to nothing, though, as the Greenock back line quickly moved the ball along and back again to score a second try and conversion in what had been a bruising first half. Half-time 3-14 to Greenock.

Stewartry started the second half at a high tempo, driving and picking up penalties. Mosey was making kicks to touch where Stevie McCulloch was winning most of the throws by Danny Boyd.

Greenock turned up the heat with a number of attacks which finished with a penalty kick at the posts that was missed. But luck was with them when the Stewartry drop-out went straight to the Greenock full-back and he sprinted right through the defence for the third try. The conversion was missed.

A series of high tackles by Greenock again went unpunished. Stewartry worked hard to penetrate the defence, winning loose balls and scrum awards as the game was played along halfway.

With 10 minutes to go, a penalty kick to the corner for Greenock was followed by them winning the lineout and driving over for the bonus point fourth try which was converted. Full time 3-26 Greenock.

If Stewartry put in the effort that they did in this game in the next two games away to Cumnock and at home to Cambuslang they should be looking to secure two bonus point wins.
