Castle Douglas got into the festive spirit on Saturday when the town celebrated its big Christmas lights switch-on.

A craft and charity fair filled the Douglas Arms Hotel with a selection of hand-made gift ideas, hundreds of children queued to see Santa in his grotto and children’s entertainers spread festive cheer.

The lights were switched on by Anna and Olaf, from Frozen, and the day was was rounded off by a spectacular fireworks display in the park.

Castle Douglas Development Forum chairman Sarah-Jane Allsopp said: “We would like to thank the Douglas Arms and local businesses who put on a fantastic show of window displays and in-store events to complement the day’s festivities.

“The committee would also like to extend special thanks to volunteers and in particular vice-chairman Neill Walker who closed his cafe to create a truly magical Santa’s grotto.”
