Star forced to settle for a share of spoils

STUARTsGILLESPIE Dalbeattie Star had to settle for a point in their basement clash with Whitehill Welfare on Saturday.

The bottom two sides in the Lowland League met at Islecroft and Star looked to be on their way thanks to Allan Jenkin’s first half header.

But 20 minutes from time Kieran Somerville struck to earn Whitehill a point that keeps them six points behind Star.

Assistant manager Gary Holden said: “Performance wise we played well. We dominated the game and we had chances to be two or three goals up at half-time.

“We had some good chances and their keeper made some great saves including a world class save from Scott Milligan in the second half.

“We got hit on the counter attack and it was quite a sloppy goal to lose. We wanted three points but we’ve still got a gap over them and it was a must not lose game for us.

“I think the stop-start nature has been hurting us and you could see on Saturday we were lacking a bit of match sharpness.”

Jenkins has two weeks left of his loan spell from Darvel Juniors which will take in this weekend’s game against East Kilbride and the following week’s derby with Gretna.

And Holden is delighted with the impact the experienced midfielder has made.

He said: “His work rate and attitude have been superb.

“He has done everything we’ve asked for him, his influence on and off the pitch has been different class and you can tell with the level he’s played at.”

Star should have a full strength squad available this weekend as they face a Kilby side who are four points clear at the top of the table.

Holden added: “East Kilbride are the best team in the league in my opinion. Some of the signings they’ve made have been incredible, such as Chris Humphreys who was at present, and good luck to them.

“If we get anything it is a bonus but we go up unbeaten in three games and we go with a bit of confidence.”
