A serial rapist who waged a campaign of sexual abuse and brutality against women, including one in Castle Douglas, was jailed for 10 years yesterday.
Michael Cain, 45, committed offences targeted at women for more than two decades and subjected j three victims to rape ordeals.
Judge Lord Burns at the High Court in Edinburgh ordered that Cain, right, formerly of Armour Drive in Dumfries, should be monitored and supervised for r a further four-year period.
He told Cain: “You were convicted by the jury of a series of offences against a series of women over a very long time.
“You pose a serious risk, to women in particular, and will do so for a considerable period dof time of time, having having regard toregard to your age.
“You have shown absolutely no remorse for this campaign of abuse against women.”
Cain denied a string of charges but was found guilty of 14 offences, including rape, assault, breach of the peace and threatening behaviour that began in 1995.
He assaulted one of the women between 2015 and 2017 at Castle Douglas and repeatedly struck her on the head and body and pinned her against a wall.
Cain also pushed the victim against a car and grabbed her, leaving her fearing she would be pushed into a river, and head-butted her.
He also threatened her with violence and told her not to speak to other men and demanded money from her. He also raped the woman on a single occasion when he grabbed her by the hair and forced her to bend over during the attack in Dumfries.
In 2001 at a guest house and another address in Dumfries he repeatedly subjected another woman to rape attacks.
Between June, 2001, and September the following year he twice attacked another woman at a property in Dumfries and spat on her face, kicked her, pushed her down a flight of stairs and grabbed her leg and forced it towards her shoulder.
A further victim was assaulted by Cain between May, 2005, and November, 2011, and was slapped on the face, grabbed by the throat and pinned against a wall. On one occasion, when she was pregnant, Cain pushed her down a flight of stairs.
Cain also raped the woman on a single occasion at a house in Dumfries when he pushed onto her back and held her arms down.
Sentence was deferred on Cain until yesterday for the preparation of a background report but the court heard no such report was available and he twice left meetings with a social worker.
Defence solicitor advocate John Keenan said Cain wanted to be sentenced and could be as he has previously served a jail sentence.
He said that Cain, who continues to deny the offences, has been subjected to threats while in custody.
A 61-year-old man who was in possession of indecent images of children and extreme porn has been placed on the sex offenders’ register by the sheriff at Dumfries.
The length of the period will be determined when Simon Churchman, of Camp belt on Cot tag es, Twyn holm, appears for sentence next month following the preparation of a background report.
He pleaded guilty to possession of the extreme porn images between March, 2011, and March last year and also admitted that between February, 2009, and March last year he downloaded indecent photographs of children. Sentence was deferred to March 27.
