New £90m plans for Glenkens windfarm

The Galloway News - - NEWS -

STUART GILLESPIE An energy giant wants to invest nearly £90 million building a windfarm in the Glenkens.

EDF Energy is planning to develop a site at Troston Loch, around five miles east of Dalry.

It has applied for permission to erect up to 14 turbines which would have a maximum height of 150 metres.

EDF say the scheme would have a potential capacity of up to 67 megawatts and the size of the proposed development means they have had to apply to the Scottish Government, rather than the council, for planning permission.

In their planning statement, the firm claims the anticipated capital expenditure for the windfarm would be £88.7 million, of which just over £10 million would be spent within Dumfries and Galloway.

There will be the full- time equivalent of nine jobs created during the 18 month construction period and EDF is proposing a community benefit fund worth up to £336,000 – or £10 million over the 30 year lifespan of the development. They will also offer the local community sharedownership in the project.

Meanwhile, the energy company behind a different windfarm development has asked for permission to build bigger turbines.

E.ON were handed planning permission by the Scottish Government in 2017 to build 18 turbines at Benbrack, which is north-east of Carsphairn.

The maximum height of the turbines was supposed to be 130m.

They have now asked to be allowed to build 16, 150m tall turbines with the other two being increased to 132m and 135m.

They also want planning permission to run for 30 years, rather than 25.

And German firm Energiekontor UK Ltd has appealed to the Scottish Government over its plans for a windfarm at Glenshimmeroch near Dalry.

They want to build 10-turbines on the site and have lodged an appeal as the council hasn’t made a decision on their plans within the required time frame.
