Stoneykirk take hold of the Galloway Cup
CURLING The Anwoth and Girthon rink of S Groom lost out in its efforts to win the prestigious Galloway Cup knock-out competition for the Stewartry.
Sponsored by James Gordon Ltd the event was won in some style by a Stoneykirk Curling Club rink skipped by Ian Kirkpatrick at Stranraer Ice Rink.
Ian, with Alex Fergusson, Adam Sharp and Brian McColm, saw off the Castle Kennedy CC rink of Hugh Parker, Colin Dalrymple, Rita Mitchell and Margaret Breadon 12-7 in the final, scoring two fours in the last two ends.
The Galloway Cup is the only competition in the curling calendar that involve rinks from three provinces, the Galloway Province, the Rhins o’ Gallowa’ Province and the Stewartry Province.
After the final game, Galloway Province President Drew Paton asked Rhins secretary Janette Sloan to present the magnificent trophy to Ian and his rink. Both the winning rink and the runners-up received McMillan Hotel vouchers.
Winning skip Ian thanked his rink and the opposition for the quality of the curling and had a special word of thanks for the James Gordon’s who continue to generously sponsor this competition. He also thanked the three secretaries, David McMiken, Janette Sloan and Louise Kerr for organising the competition.
A bottle raffle to help with insurance cover for the trophy raised £133. Thanks to all who brought bottles and bought tickets.
