ORIENTEERING Members of Solway Orienteers have ventured to events hosted by neighbouring clubs in preparation for the Scottish Championships in May.

Over the weekend, after the schools’ championships, there was a double header competition in the Lake District. There were only two Solway members taking part in the Lakeland Galoppen at Haverthwaite on Saturday.

Dave McQuillen ran the green course and was rewarded with 27th place out of 127 finishers, second in his age class. Jane McQuillen ran short green and finished 41st and fourth in her age class.

Sunday saw the action move to Hampsfell where Dave and Jane McQuillen were joined by Steve Johnson. Dave and Steve ran the short green course where Dave had an excellent run to win the M75 class with only international class juniors ahead of him while Steve was happy to finish fourth M65.

Meanwhile Jane chose very short green for her second run of the weekend and ended the day third W75.

Last weekend, Ian Murgatroyd was the only local to take on the long course at Border Liners’ Saturday training event and returned in 10th place overall.

On Sunday, Solway was well represented at the latest round of the Scottish Orienteering League at Dumyat near Stirling. Jane McQuillen ran the short green and 44th overall saw her the third W75 home.

Ian Turner cont i nued his rehabilitation, returning 30th on green with Dave McQuillen choosing short blue and running to 24th overall.

Zoe Graham contested the blue course and her 33rd place gave her second W20 position, beating clubmate Derek Kennedy who finished 57th in what was the most hotly contested competition. Stuart Graham chose short brown and was happy to finish 24th overall.

This coming Saturday, the next local event will take place in Cally Woods, Gatehouse. It is hoped that some of those who enjoyed the schools event will go along to make further use of the outdoors in what is a very pleasant forest. Courses available are white through to blue and registration will be in the Forestry Commission car park area with starts from 10am till 12 noon.

The maps cost the usual £4/2 for seniors/juniors with a levy for nonmembers of £2/1.
