Mu­sic aid for vil­lage gala

STEPHEN NOR­RIS Cross­michael Gala vol­un­teers are going Transat­lantic to help raise the cash re­quired to stage the big vil­lage day out.

C o - o r ga n i s e r Jim McClel­land reck­ons £4,000 will be needed to un­der­write the event on Satur­day, Au­gust 24.

And his eight-strong team soon received help from an un­ex­pected quar­ter – a top US- Cana­dian blue­grass band.

John Reis­chman and the Jay­birds will play at Cross­michael Memo­rial Hall next Satur­day, May 4.

The gig, bro­kered by CatS­trand in New Gal­loway, is part of the band’s UK tour.

Mr McClel­land said: “It’s a fundraiser to­wards the gala. It should be a great night.

“We have also or­gan­ised a 60s-70s disco on May 25 and a bingo night in June 8.”

The gala is be­ing re­vived after a gap of more than a decade.

Main attraction on the day will be a strong-man con­test – a tra­di­tional fea­ture at Cross­michael in years gone by.

Other en­ter­tain­ment pen­cilled in so far in­cludes a dog show and dog agility and chil­dren’s sports.

The ad-hoc com­mit­tee will meet agan next Wed­nes­day, May 2, to agree a draft gala pro­gramme.

Mr McClel­land said: “Ev­ery­thing is com­ing to­gether.

“The only thing wor­ry­ing me is the weather.

“If we get the sun­shine it will be fan­tas­tic.”

He added: “A lot of peo­ple have not seen their gala be­cause it has not been held for a long time.

“There’s a lot of anticipati­on to see how it goes.”
