Music aid for village gala
STEPHEN NORRIS Crossmichael Gala volunteers are going Transatlantic to help raise the cash required to stage the big village day out.
C o - o r ga n i s e r Jim McClelland reckons £4,000 will be needed to underwrite the event on Saturday, August 24.
And his eight-strong team soon received help from an unexpected quarter – a top US- Canadian bluegrass band.
John Reischman and the Jaybirds will play at Crossmichael Memorial Hall next Saturday, May 4.
The gig, brokered by CatStrand in New Galloway, is part of the band’s UK tour.
Mr McClelland said: “It’s a fundraiser towards the gala. It should be a great night.
“We have also organised a 60s-70s disco on May 25 and a bingo night in June 8.”
The gala is being revived after a gap of more than a decade.
Main attraction on the day will be a strong-man contest – a traditional feature at Crossmichael in years gone by.
Other entertainment pencilled in so far includes a dog show and dog agility and children’s sports.
The ad-hoc committee will meet agan next Wednesday, May 2, to agree a draft gala programme.
Mr McClelland said: “Everything is coming together.
“The only thing worrying me is the weather.
“If we get the sunshine it will be fantastic.”
He added: “A lot of people have not seen their gala because it has not been held for a long time.
“There’s a lot of anticipation to see how it goes.”
