MP gains promotion
Dumfries and Galloway Tory MP Alister Jack has received his second promotion of the year at Westminster.
Mr Jack’s appointment as Lord Commissioner of HM Treasury was confirmed on Tuesday.
The 56-year-old moves up from his job as an assistant government whip to the more senior role of government whip.
His job will include trying to persuade rebel Tory MPs to back Theresa May over Brexit.
Three Conservatives pro–EU MPs quit the party in February to join the new Independent Group.
And dozens of Brexiteer Tory MPs voted down the PM’s exit deal from Europe on three occasions.
Mr Jack said: “There is no escaping the fact these are challenging times in the Commons. “I will being doing my utmost to help secure progress in the weeks ahead.
“However, as I’ve stated previously, my main focus will remain representing the people of Dumfries and Galloway constituency.”
The MP was made an assistant government whip in February.
