Great response from tour director

The Galloway News - - [email protected] VIEW -

Sir - My thanks to the Galloway News reporters whose enquiries brought an apology from the Tour of Britain route director for bypassing New Galloway and a promise to consider the tiny royal burgh next time.

That’s a very fair result in the circumstances and far more than our elected representatives and paid council officials achieved.

I contacted all three councillors representing this ward. Only one responded saying they all worked together on the tour and coming through New Galloway “simply wouldn’t be possible”.

So no hope at all as far as they were concerned.

I also heard from Dumfries and Galloway Council’s senior events officer explaining his promotional strategy.

None of them answered the simple question – did you actually ask for the route to include New Galloway?

It is time the council and our tourism chiefs used their leverage to maximise economic benefit for rural communities like ours, not just coastal towns like Kirkcudbright.

I hope New Galloway’s community council will write to Andy Hawes (of SweetSpot), the tour’s route director, thanking him for his positive response and opening the door to future co-operation.

Stuart Littlewood New Galloway
