Frank in­sight on liv­ing with COPD

Pupils at Kirkcud­bright Acad­emy had the chance to in­ter­view a suf­ferer of chronic ob­struc­tive pul­monary dis­ease (COPD).

Martin Char­ters vis­ited the school as part of the Breath schools en­gage­ment pro­gramme.

This was the first time some­one who suf­fers from the dis­ease has been in­cluded in one of the vis­its and he re­ceived a fan­tas­tic level of in­ter­est and bar­rage of ques­tions from pupils, pro­vid­ing frank and mean­ing­ful replies that of­fered gen­uine in­sight into the im­pact of COPD on both qual­ity of life and close fam­ily.

COPD is an in­cur­able lung dis­ease that is par­tic­u­larly preva­lent in south west Scot­land and Ire­land.

The Breath Project is a cross-bor­der project that tack­les the dis­ease.
