ACTIVITY camps which took place in Renfrewshire during the Easter holidays to help kids beat boredom have been hailed as a big success.

Hundreds of youngsters enjoyed the free fun at Street Stuff multi-sports and dance camps provided by Renfrewshire Council and St Mirren Football Club.

Camps in Johnstone, Linwood, Renfrew and the Ferguslie, Foxbar and Gallowhill areas of Paisley were fully booked during the two-week break, with around 750 places taken each week.

They were open to anyone aged five to 14 and activities included football, basketball, hockey, badminton, tennis and dance.

Everyone who attended also enjoyed a healthy lunch, free of charge.

Councillor Marie McGurk, of Renfrewshire’s communities and housing policy board, said: “By putting on these activities, we are supporting young people to have a fun break from school.”

“It’s a little emotional to think about it.

“When I first opened, I didn’t think the place would still be here a year later, let alone 45 years later.”

Retirement will also make it easier for Gordon to undergo a knee operation that is on the horizon.

In the meantime, he can reflect on the many messages of support he has had from people on social media, in the store and on the street since announcing his decision to pull down the shutters for the last time.

Gordon said he will remember all of the happy times he enjoyed while running the business and has thanked his many customers.

He added: “It has all been fantastic and there have been many good memories.

“Nearly everyone I have ever met in this job has been top class.”
