Women who truly inspire

- By DAVE ROBSON dave.robson@reachplc.com @DaveRobsonGaz

THE ANNUAL search for Redcar and Cleveland’s Inspiring Women is under way.

The Inspiring Women project will celebrate its fifth birthday at the award ceremony in 2020, and nominations are needed to recognise local heroes who have made a significant impact on their community.

It’s already a trademark of the awards that the people who are nominated come from many sectors.

From hard-working volunteers to dedicated guide leaders, these are the ordinary people doing extraordinary things.

Last year’s big winner was Gemma Sands, who established a charity, Remembering Rebecca, in memory of her daughter who died at the age of just 21 months.

Gemma organises fundraising activities so that the charity can provide equipment, holidays and support for children with disabilities and their siblings.

Redcar MP Anna Turley said: “The Inspiring Women Awards are a celebration of the amazing women and young people of Redcar and Cleveland.

“A chance for the unsung heroes of our borough to shine, and to share their stories to inspire others.

“We started this project to commemorate the legacy of Mo Mowlam and it has grown into a brilliant annual programme of events, with past winners taking a lead in organising the next year’s event.

“All the time I meet brilliant women in our borough quietly getting on and making a difference.

“This is a chance to give them the recognition they deserve, and I urge everyone to submit nominations for inspiring women in their lives.”

Councillor Karen King, deputy leader of Redcar and Cleveland Council, said: “This is a wonderful project which recognises some of the amazing women in our borough and their many achievements.

“I fully support this, and encourage as many people as possible to get their nominations in.

“I would also like to congratulate the volunteers who work so hard to put this inspiring event together every year, many of whom are previous winners.

“They continue to shine a torch on other women who do such incredible work in our borough, which is a great legacy of the project.

“Congratulations on five fantastic years.”

If you know someone who lives or works in Redcar and Cleveland and deserves this recognition, nominate them at www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/ InspiringWomen2020

The ceremony will be taking place in March 2020 at the Wilton Centre.
