Masks return to hospitals as cases rise

-

A TEESSIDE hospital trust is reintroducing masks in clinical areas.

New data released by Public Health England this week shows most neighbourhoods have seen a spike in coronavirus cases, with one area on Teesside even reporting a 300% increase in infections.

Now, North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust has taken the “difficult decision” to reintroduce the mandatory wearing of masks and face coverings in patient areas within its hospitals.

The new rule, which will come into force from Friday, July 8, means all staff, patients and visitors to the University Hospital of North Tees, University Hospital of Hartlepool, and Peterlee Community Hospital will be required to wear a facemask to enter a clinical department or ward.

Karen Sheard, deputy chief nurse, said: “We all hoped we would never have to make this decision.

“Covid-19 remains a serious threat and we cannot and will not compromise the safety of our patients and colleagues.

“On 1 June, we had just 11 inpatients with the virus. By June 30, we had 64.

“The escalating rate of infection is clear.

“Patient and colleague safety must be our priority and we ask everyone to do their bit by wearing a mask when visiting our hospitals.”

Inpatients will be asked to wear a mask while in bed and while away from their bed space if this can be tolerated, and outpatients will need to wear masks throughout their consultation/treatment.

People visiting friends and family will be required to wear a mask while on the ward and are reminded to book a visiting appointment by calling 01642 617617 and ask for the ward your loved one is staying on.
