ENGLAND equalled the most amount of goals scored in a Euros game as they battered Norway 8-0 on Monday night.

The Lionesses secured their place in the competition’s quarter finals with their triumphant win – cemented with a hat-trick from Beth Mead.

Mead – a Whitby native and former Teesside University student – scored a brace in the first half of the match at Brighton’s AMEX Stadium before completing her hat-trick in the 81st minute.

This is the 27-year-old’s second international hat-trick this year, after the forward bagged three goals in a 10-0 thrashing of North Macedonia back in April.

The Arsenal striker, who grew up in Hinderwell, started her career at Middlesbrough FC’s Centre of Excellence as a 12-year-old then moved up the A19 to Sunderland in 2011, where she played for six years.

She graduated from Teesside

University whilst at Sunderland, gaining a degree in Sports Development, then signed for the Gunners in 2017, where she has scored 50 goals in 84 appearances.

Hat-trick hero Beth Mead joins a number of Lionesses representing the North East at the Euros; including Jill Scott from Sunderland, Lucy Bronze from Berwick and Demi Stokes from South Shields.

In Monday night’s battering of Norway, the home side in England began their scoring with a 12th minute penalty from Georgia Stanway followed by a goal from Lauren Hemp three minutes later.

Mead then got her scoring well under way by grabbing two goals before the break, as well as a brace from Ellen White, making the score line 6-0 at half time.

The second half saw goals from Alessia Russo and Beth Mead completing her hattrick, the score equalling the most amount of goals in any Euros match – both in men’s and women’s football.

England, who are the competition’s hosts, now go into the quarter finals where they could face the winners of Group B a week on Wednesday in Brighton – either Germany or Spain.

Chants of “it’s coming home” rang around the stadium as the final whistle blew; a triumphant win from the Lionesses and a historical night for in form Beth Mead.

Taking to Twitter to reflect on her hat-trick, Mead wrote: “About last night, we enjoyed that one Brighton. Full focus for Friday!”

Sarina Wiegman’s England side will face Northern Ireland in their final group game on Friday at Southampton’s St Mary’s Stadium, with Whitby’s Mead no doubt looking to continue her prolific goal scoring run.
