Youngster Malley on trial at Imps

-

FORMER Middlesbrough midfielder Connor Malley is on trial at Lincoln City, writes CRAIG JOHNS.

It’s the youngster’s second trial club of the summer after leaving Boro at the end of his contract, having previously spent time at Huddersfield.

Malley played 60 minutes for League One outfit Lincoln City in their friendly against Sheffield United yesterday.

According to fan blog The Stacey West, the 22-year-old ‘struggled to make an impression in a youthful midfield’ as Mark Kennedy took a closer look at him.

It’s not known if Malley will stay on at Lincoln following his trial yet. It’s the midfielder’s second trial of the summer having also spent time with Huddersfield’s B side.

Malley matches the Terriers’ policy for their second string, signing players under the age of 23 who are let go by teams elsewhere in the hope they thrive in West Yorkshire.

But for whatever reason, Huddersfield appear to have not taken up the option on the midfielder as his search for a new club continues.

He was released by Boro this summer following the expiration of his contract and is being supported by Boro’s new Academy Alumni Programme.

Malley made four appearances for Boro’s first team in total, after an impressive debut against Rotherham in April 2021.

But he failed to live up the heights he reached in that game, subsequently failing to earn any league action last term under either Neil Warnock or Chris Wilder.

He joined Gateshead earlier this year and excelled as the Tyneside club earned promotion to the National League.
