NEIL Warnock is the new Huddersfield Town manager, the former Middlesbrough boss coming out of retirement to take the reins at the Championship strugglers until the end of the season.

The Terriers are battling relegation from the Championship and slipped to second-bottom at the weekend when they lost to relegation rivals Wigan Athletic.

They had been looking for their third manager of the campaign, having previously sacked rookie bosses Danny Schofield and Mark Fotheringham.

In a bid to avoid a drop to the third tier, the West Yorkshire outfit has turned to Warnock’s experience, the 74-year-old agreeing to take on the role. Ronnie Jepson is joining him as assistant.

It is a return to the South Yorkshire club for Warnock, who previously managed there between 1993 and 1995.

On his return, Warnock said: “I am really excited about this challenge.

“My first spell at Huddersfield Town had everything – we went to Wembley twice, moved into the new stadium and really built the club from nothing. It was a special time.

“I am coming back to help the club but also chairman Dean Hoyle. I know what he has done behind the scenes and I have always had a lot of time for him.

“I have looked at the fixtures and we have fantastic games to come.

“I want to come back and put smiles on faces!”

Warnock has plenty of experience in relegation firefighting – the job he was brought in to do at Boro in June 2020.

Comparing himself to Red Adair, Warnock successfully saved Boro from Championship relegation with his seven games in charge but then could not guide the club to a play-off finish.
