Pair’s shock at finding rare blue lobster

-

TWO friends were left in disbelief when they found a rare ‘one-in-twomillion’ blue lobster.

Lewis Goldsborough and Niall Williams, both from Middlesbrough, were out for a drive on Monday night when they decided to stop off for a walk around South Gare in Redcar.

The pair were walking along the coastline when they found the bright blue creature, and after a quick Google they realised how rare their discovery was.

The rare blue lobsters get their colour due to a genetic abnormality.

This isn’t the first time a blue lobster washed up on Teesside’s shoreline, with Rhys Westwood spotting the one of the crustaceans while on a run along Saltburn beach back in September.

Lewis, 23, explained how he and Niall came to find the lobster – and how shocked they were to find out how rare it was.

He said: “So about 9pm on Monday night we went for a drive out to South Gare and Niall said we should go crabbing, but we both didn’t have the right clothes on so we just walked along the Gare instead. I tried to pull out what I thought was a crab from out of a rock and Niall said ‘you do realise what that is don’t you – that’s a blue lobster!’.

“Niall said it was a one in two million chance of finding one like that and I thought he was lying, but I Googled it and he was right. I was quite shocked to be fair.”

Lewis and Niall, both 23, put the lobster back where it was after snapping some pictures of their rare find.

Lewis added: “It was moving when we found it but I think it was on its last legs, we didn’t want to disturb it too much so we put it back where we found it under some rocks.

“When we came back on Tuesday night we tried to find where it was but I think it had been washed away with the tide.”
