A COUPLE got the best wedding gift when neonatal nurses surprised them with a live stream of their tiny daughter dressed as a flower girl complete with blooms.

Staff at James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough didn’t want Mia June Nixon to miss out on her mum and dad’s big day when they tied the knot at The Sporting Lodge.

Amy and Alex Nixon had everything planned to marry in Cyprus this coming September when Amy realised she was pregnant. With Mia due to be born in August, they decided to cancel.

The pair, both 28, booked to get married in the UK on Saturday, May 20, before their baby made an appearance.

However, Mia had other ideas, and while Amy was out making lastminute wedding preparations she started to get contractions.

Alex said the hospital admitted

Amy and tried to delay the labour, but Mia was born on May 2 at 24 weeks weighing in at 1lb 12oz.

Although tiny, staff say the little one is doing well and now weighs 1lb 15oz.

The happy dad and groom, who lives in Coulby Newham, said: “We sat down and discussed cancelling the wedding.

“But we had lost all of our deposits and everything from cancelling the one in Cyprus so we decided to go ahead. The hospital surprised us on the day with a live stream of Mia.

“She was wearing a little dress and headband and had some flowers.

“Once I saw her that was it, we were all crying. The guests were crying and even the nurses were crying, it was so lovely.”

Nurses also decorated Mia’s crib and organised cupcakes and fizz so the little family could have a celebration when Alex and Amy went to the hospital to see their daughter after the ceremony.

Alex, who works in the hospitality industry, said: “The staff in there are amazing, they go above and beyond all the time. For them to do all that for us, we just could never thank them enough.”

Amy, who works in construction, suffers from polycystic ovaries and had been told by medics there was very little chance of her becoming pregnant.

Alex said: “The pregnancy was a huge shock because we were told Amy was probably infertile. Mia was a very happy surprise.”

He said their daughter is already proving to be a feisty little girl, pulling her tubes out and even trying to push up on her tiny little arms.

Alex says they are now doing whatever they can to raise awareness of premature births and to boost funds for the neonatal unit at The James Cook University Hospital and the charity Bliss.

They have already raised almost £600 and are organising fundraisers later in the year.
