A SLICE OF almost tropical-looking beach on the edge of Assynt, north west Scotland, Charity McArdle captures a quiet moment at the sparkling Achmelvich Bay in the calmness of spring. “The challenge here was to create the lightness and harmony,” she notes when reflecting on the piece. “I had been painting stormy, moody skies; and to be presented with this idyllic location with blue skies, fluffy clouds and a turquoise sea was quite daunting!”
Due to Covid-19 restrictions throughout 2020, Charity discovered her love of seascapes by exploring new areas closer to home. “During the lockdown, I had much more time to paint, and I was able to explore the incredible Moray Coast. The constantly changing light and endless beaches inspired me, and I discovered a love for seascapes. I found that other people loved them too, and suddenly my work was in greater demand!
“I wanted to create a realistic representation of the area without losing the qualities of an expressive painting. I used a palette knife on the rocky outcrops, which allowed me to be spontaneous and still create realism.” n See more of Charity’s work at charitymcardlefineart.com and facebook.com/ expressionistpainting
