ESSENTIAL INFORMATION
The Grande Randonée (GR) 20
Background
The GR20 spans 190km (118 miles) across Corsica from north to south. An average hiker typically takes 12 days to complete the hike. A popular option is to do one half of the trail depending on preference: either the rugged north from Calenzana to Vizzavona, or the gentler south from Vizzavona to Conca. It is recommended to factor in a couple of extra days as thunderstorms are common.
When to go
June - September. July and August get very busy.
Getting there
International flights to Bastia and Calvi can be expensive. An alternative option is flying to Nice and taking the ferry to Île Rousse (north) or Porto Vecchio (south).
Maps and guides
Paddy Dillon’s Cicerone guide to the GR20 is a great trail companion. Paper maps are usually not required. The trail is marked by red and white double stripes every few metres, but care should still be taken to stay on the path.
Skills and experience
The GR20 requires a high level of fitness, plus considerable experience on steep and exposed terrain. It certainly not an ideal candidate for a first-time backpacker. The north section in particular is very rugged, with serious scrambling sections and the use of bolted chains. Water sources are scarce, typically only at the refuges, and high temperatures pose a risk of dehydration. Hut wardens speak limited English; learning basic French is definitely an asset.
Accommodation and resupply
Wild camping is not permitted on the GR20. Refuge beds can be booked in advance (beware of bed bugs), tents can be booked on-site. Pitching your own tent costs €7. Basic vegetarian meals and a selection of drinks are available for purchase at the refuges. The whole trail is cash only; there is no ATM in the midpoint town of Vizzavona. Resupplying in larger towns is recommended, as the shop selection in Vizzavona is limited and expensive.
