THREE CLASSIC HILLWALKS IN FISHERFIELD

-

BIDEAN A’ GHLAS THUILL, AN TEALLACH

DISTANCE: 12.6km / 8 miles ASCENT: 1088m / 3569ft DURATION: 4-5 hours

A relatively straightforward but steep walk from Dundonnell takes you up to the highest point on An Teallach, with fabulous views across to the Sgurr Fiona and the Corrag Bhuidhe Pinnacles.

Whilst the ‘there and back again’ route should be within grasp of most keen hillwalkers, there is an exciting continuation along the ridge – the full An Teallach traverse – which should really only be attempted by experienced walkers comfortable with scrambling and masses of exposure.

SLIOCH

DISTANCE: 19km / 12 miles ASCENT: 1144m / 3753ft DURATION: 8-10 hours

A long day walk from Kinlochewe. The route begins with a relatively flat 6km walk on the northern banks of the Kinlochewe River to reach the base of the mountain. The ascent links steep climbs with much more gradual ascents to give you some respite. The view to the north from the summit it excellent, taking in both A’ Mhaighdean and An Teallach.

THE FISHERFIELD ROUND

DISTANCE: 29km / 18 miles from Shenavall bothy (plus 13km/8 mile walk in and out from Dundonell) ASCENT: 2254m / 7395ft DURATION: Usually completed over 2-3 days

You could conceivably attempt this as a single mammoth day starting from Corrie Hallie (40km!) or the bothy at Shenavall (29km), but it also makes an excellent multiple night backpacking route.

In all you’ll take in six mountains (five of them Munros) and complete more than 2300m of ascent. The most notable summits are Beinn Tarsuinn, with its views of An Teallach, and A’ Mhaighdean. Be careful crossing the Strath na Sealga, which is dangerous in spate.
