Beattock, north end of village

DAY 1 Follow SU Way signs under motorway, then lanes, a small hill and a beechwood. Track up to start of forest.

Down L over stream. Path then track E, then zigzag path up L onto high ridge. Cross Croft Head and down to col.

Rejoin SU Way up Selcoth Burn, pass Ettrick Head. Forest track past Over Phawhope bothy.

At Potburn, head up NW onto ridgeline. Cross Bodesbeck Law for overnight on the ridgeline, for example Bell Craig.

DAY 2 Follow ridgeline over Andrewhinney Hill and Peniestone Knowe to rejoin SUW. Path and track down to Tibbie Shiels.

SUW path and track along S side St Mary’s Loch. Cross A708 and visit Dryhope Tower just W of the trail.

Tricky navigation via valleys and hillocks NE to Blackhouse, with another ruined pele tower.

NE up through plantations to high path along the fringe of the Ettrick Hills. From Blake Muir descend ridge with faint path NE to Kirkhouse. Road to Traquair and Innerleithen.
