Cow Castle & the Barle Valley Exmoor ENGLAND

-

1

Start/Finish

Simonsbath car park GR: SS774394

Return to the main road and turn right, soon leaving it to the left to take a well-marked footpath (the Two Moors Way), following signs for Cow Castle.

2

In 3.5km, beyond the gate below Cow Castle, leave the path to the right for the steep but short climb to the flat summit, leaving at the far side to regain the path.

3

Cross the Barle at the bridge, turning right to follow a signed track to Blue Gate. In 1.5km join a minor road.

4

Cross the main road at Blue Gate, bearing just north of west across open ground beyond to find a good track, turning right.

5

Turn right on meeting the Barle again and stay close to the river. The route grows slowly more challenging as you wend a way between the river and rising ground. Cross the only fence close to the river.

6

Cross the river at the weir, choosing to wade just downstream (the safer option) or cross the weir itself (requiring good balance) depending on water levels. If the river looks at all challenging, turn instead to climb the steep slope and turn left along the road.

7

Turn left, to find a footbridge over the mill leat, then follow the signed (and easy) path to Simonsbath Mill, and then the road back to the car park.
