ON THE ROOF OF SPAIN:

EMILY’S ROUTE

-

START: Trevelez FINISH: Lanjaron DISTANCE: 150km/ 93 miles

ASCENT: 11,500m/37,720ft

DURATION: 7 days

NUMBER OF PEAKS (3000ERS):

Travel from the UK: I flew to Malaga and arranged a pick up and transfer to Trevélez.

Accommodation: Camping at Trevélez on the first night (cheap and cheerful), wild camping for the rest. There are a few bothies and manned huts in the area.

The route I describe in this feature through the Sierra Nevada of Spain was a Guinness World Record attempt to climb the most 3000m peaks in a week. As such, for anyone looking for a fun time in the mountains I wouldn’t really recommend it – especially when the main ridgeline is so good. I have outlined the ‘vital statistics’ of my route above; but look up the Integral de los Tres Miles for an itinerary that takes in all the peaks and more, without the merciless hill slogging. It stays high and could be completed in under a week if you’re moving fast.
