TRAILS through Sweden's forests
Whilst lying to the east of the main mountain chain, Muddus National Park protects one of Sweden’s most significant swathes of old-growth boreal forest along with mires, low hills and tumbling rivers. A marked trail traverses the southern half of the park. Count on 3-4 days. Overnight huts are available if you don’t want to camp.
Paddling a canoe or kayak is a good way to explore Pärlälven ancient mountain forest reserve, which is centred around the large lake of Karats. It’s particularly beautiful in autumn when the distant, snow-dusted peaks form a spectacular backdrop.
Whilst more famous for its mountain scenery, the Kungsleden or King’s Trail crosses a number of protected forest areas. The relatively little-frequented section of the trail south of Kvikkjokk offers an attractive blend of deep forest, lakes, and rolling uplands.
Many of Sweden’s 18 ancient mountain forest nature reserves have little infrastructure in the way of open huts, trails and bridges. For those seeking solitude, there’s a good chance you won’t meet another person. You could easily spend a week or more traversing them, occasionally venturing above the tree-line to appreciate their vastness.
