Akeld, parking area on left-hand track into settlement

Return towards the road, and take the farm track (bridleway) uphill to the right of the wooded hollow of Akeld Burn. Before Gleadscleugh house fork right. Track continues SW 2km to corner of plantation.
Bend left, track marked St Cuthbert’s Way. In 200m cross stream and fork off left on peaty path, aiming for gate on skyline. Before gate, turn left on peaty track, NE to col at head of incised stream.
Track continues on S flank of Gains Law. At large grouse butt take track forking L. In 500m, turn R, marked permissive path, over stile to Humbleton Hill summit.
Descend S of E on wide path. At slope foot, path L to gate and start of track to L signed for Gleadscleugh.
Follow field strip along hill foot.
At crossing fence, take gate down R (not stile up L). After two ladder stiles, small path contours around lower slope of Harehope Hill.
At fence corner, drop R to green track. Turn down R along top of wooded Akeld Burn. Ignore farm track on L but take next gate, rough track past tall stone bastle (fortified farmhouse) into Akeld.
