START/FINISH village green 1 car park, Wasdale Head

Walk north on the road to Wasdale Head Inn. Pass in front of pub, veer left slightly and pick up path heading north to right of Mosedale Beck. Fork left at junction next to Fog Mire Beck, go through gate and – at base of direct Kirk Fell ascent – fork left again through another gate. Head northwest alongside drystone wall, following the general line of Mosedale Beck. Go through another gate and continue deep into bowllike Mosedale valley. Just beyond large cairn, fork right and take Black Sail Pass path as it climbs steadily north to Gatherstone Beck.
